Changing that system may reduce the individual’s advantage while allowing many more people to learn, create, participate, and contribute. Over time, the capabilities created across the wider community may become considerably greater than those preserved for the individual.

Imagine a small group controlling access to knowledge that could help millions of people solve an important problem. Keeping that knowledge restricted protects the group’s immediate advantage, while sharing it allows many others to build upon it. New discoveries then emerge from people who previously could not participate.
A Minority With an Important Idea
Imagine that only a handful of researchers initially believe that an established practice is harmful. The majority disagrees with them, but evidence eventually demonstrates that the researchers were correct. Because Principle 2 concerns evolution rather than simple numerical majority, their minority position can ultimately serve the many.

A small number of people would personally benefit from refusing that limitation, while cooperation would allow the wider community to become stronger or overcome the problem.
